At what point does a drawn out transfer saga become frustrating to 'fans'?
The focus is on the fans because those inside the club know what's really going on, if the player is coming or not, they have all the correct updates and of course can hardly get frustrated by anything they read on the papers or on their social media feed.
For the fans though, with so many news aggregators on twitter and Facebook, reporting different things on the same issue (in this case transfers), it becomes difficult to know who to believe, rumours about here and there even to the point of the so called 'reliable sources' jumping in on the situation for interactions.
For so many United supporters (on social media at least) they got past that frustrating point two weeks ago. A sudden completion of de Jong's transfer to Old Trafford will bring more relief than it would excitement to a lot of fans.
A Drawn Out Saga
Early in June, it was reported that the transfer was 95% going to happen. Well, that wasn't hard to guess in itself. Barcelona are in financial ruins and de Jong is one player they can make good money from while freeing their wage bill to register new signings, they were open to the sale. United also had Erik ten Hag pushing for the deal, a manager who knew exactly how to bring out the best in de Jong.
However, reports of the club owing Frenkie de Jong some €17m hadn't emerged then. And that's effectively, what seems to be holding the deal.
So far this summer, United fans have been excited by news that the transfer would be finalised by 30th June as that was the deadline Barca had to raise a certain amount of money to meet La Liga's wage cap terms.
Then, a little over three weeks ago, the two clubs had reportedly agreed on an initial fee of €65m and a further €20m in add ons. And that was when the issue of owed wages came into the limelight.
Just under two weeks ago, United negotiated a guaranteed €75m fee with Barcelona, but there came the real issue of the owed wages. Frenkie wouldn't bulge unless paid his owed wages.
As Frustrating As They Come
For over a month or so, there's been contrasting reports from Spain and England. Various Spanish outlets has consistently been been saying that de Jong does not want to leave.
Fabrizio Romano has reiterated more than once that that is, in fact, the case.
And similar has been said this morning too.
✅ But, Frenkie’s agents were really clear with Barca & United 2 weeks ago that he wants to stay + No intention to take a pay cut.

So the situation is still not clarified @FabrizioRomano @YouTube 🇳🇱
🚨 Barca will ask Frenkie again to take a pay cut. But from what i’m told, frenkie has NO intention to take it. He wants to stay with the current contract valid @FabrizioRomano @YouTube 💰❌

And that is where fans are being pushed to the wall because in England, the report is that Frenkie de Jong is open to a move (although he prefers to stay at Barca) but only if his owed wages are paid.
And this is where the patience of the fans is being put to the ultimate test. The reports are literally in your face everytime you scroll through twitter or facebook.
It gets as bad as the same news handle posting two different reports from different sources for the "clicks and interaction".
With the updates being shoved down everyone's throats, you can't blame any fans who say it is time to move on and look at alternatives.
United fans are used to things like this. Thing of Wesley Sneijder (who didn't happen), think of Jadon Sancho (signed a summer late), think of Serej Milinkivic Savic (who is still being linked - but at least nothing has ever been advanced), think of Angel Di Maria (ended up playing a season at Old Trafford and ran off to Paris).
The only reason 'some' are still keeping their cool is because he is reportedly Erik ten Hag’s main target and the manager has asked the club to keep pursuing him. However, it can't get more frustrating than what United fans have been forced to pass through so far in this saga.
